I've been seeing a lot of cut-out dresses on the red carpet recently and I'm like not sure how I feel about it. Do you remember that episode of Laguna Beach where the new girl Casey wears that hideous yellow sparkly cut-out dress to prom? I think that's where my hatred for the style first started. It's been a slow climb up from despising the look to tolerating it, and I feel like I'm finally at a point now where I see a cut-out dress and can objectively decided whether or not it looks good.
To that end, let's talk about Nikki Reed, Ashley Greene, and Gwyneth Paltrow. All three wore cut-out dresses this week, but only two of them looked good. The third looked like she lost in a fight with a hungry hippo. Chomp, chomp.
The loser in this case is Gwyneth. Her Stella McCartney frock looks frockin' ridiculous. I usually adore all of Ms. Paltrow's style choices -- I died for that green number and I was one of the few who loved her Pucci Emmys dress -- but I will not stand for this one. It's cut-out at its worst. She looks half-dressed and half-brained. I'm having flashbacks to Casey and I'm about to lose my lunch.
Nikki, on the other hand, looks polished in her chartreuse Michael Kors dress. Same with Ashley in her Donna Karan gown. The subtle ad cut-outs are flattering and tasteful. Their looks are like a "how to" for people considering showing some extra skin. Gwen's is definitely a "how not to." Even though she's got 10 years on the Twilight actresses, she wasn't wise enough to realize that her dress was a mess.
We'll let Gwen's crime against fashion go this time because I'm feeling magnanimous this lovely Friday. Let's just hope this doesn't happen again. Even though cut-outs seem to be a mounting trend, if she shows up on the red carpet looking like her bestie Beyonce took a bite out of her dress (weird pregnancy cravings!), I will not be pleased.
Do you like the cut-out look?
