Ladies, it’s okay to be cheap. In fact, beauty and style expert Andie Paige, the author of Style on a Shoestring who has appeared on shows like How Do I Look, Starting Over and Ten Years Younger, says all your beauty products should come from the drugstore.
“You just have to have a keen eye and pay attention to what most dermatologists suggest,” she says, noting her fondness for Alpha Hydrox products, a fave line of dermatologists, where nothing retails for more than $15. She also loves the Olay Regenerist micro-sculpting cream and the Roc Multi-Correxion eye treatment.
And the really great thing about shopping for makeup and skincare and hair products at the drugstore -- besides the price -- is that most major retailers offer a refund on products you aren’t satisfied with, Paige says. That includes places like CVS, Walgreens, and Target.
Her tip, even though it can be a bit of a pain, is to ask the cashier to ring up two transactions: one for your prescriptions, dish soap, toilet paper, and candy bars (yeah, we buy ’em, too), and one for all your beauty purchases.
"Most drug stores will give you a 30-day money-back guarantee, but we often lose the receipt – it’s a mile long and you don’t save it," she says. "If you can just tuck away that beauty receipt, it makes it easy to get your money back and work that system until you find something that really gives you the results you’re looking for. That’s how I’ve come to find a lot of the products I love – through trial and error."
Where do you like to buy your makeup?
