Being First Lady of the United States means being under the microscope in millions of ways -- especially when it comes to fashion. Still, you'd think Michelle Obama, considered the most trendsetting First Ladies we've had in recent memory, would have a flawless track record, right? As it turns out, not so much.
Mrs. Obama recalled on BET's 106 and Park this week her biggest fashion faux pas, which she's come to truly regret, because it caused "a huge stink" ...
It happened back in August 2009, when the Obama family was on vacation in Arizona. While touring the Grand Canyon on a hot summer day, Michelle picked a white tank, a checked button-up shirt, sneakers, and a pair of casual gray shorts. She was wearing the outfit as she exited Air Force One, and apparently, that was enough to get tongues clucking up a storm. Ugh.
FLOTUS said of the backlash:
People were like, 'she's wearing shorts getting off of Air Force One!' Sometimes I forget I'm the first lady and I'm running around in shorts.
So crazy! It's like ... let the woman be! Michelle almost always looks so incredibly polished that for people to flip out about one dressed-down incident like this is absolutely ludicrous. Not to mention that are just about a million excuses for wearing casual shorts -- weather, they're just easy to wear, she was sightseeing, she has amazing legs, so why not show 'em off? The year was 2009, not 1909!
Thankfully, it sounds like Michelle doesn't have to worry too much about the slip-up ... 59 percent of HuffPost readers polled agreed she "absolutely" had "the right to bare legs." Cheers to that!
