Fashion designer and potential spokesperson for fake tanner and silver hair Karl Lagerfeld has been running his mouth almost as bad as Marie Claire's blogger Maura Kelly when she said how fat people were gross brought on by seeing an episode of Mike & Molly. Huge backlash there and then Kelly ended up revealing that she had an eating disorder and that was the reason for her extreme disgust.
Marie Claire magazine should take note that Lagerfeld doesn't keep up with their blog because he made the same kind of mistake with this remark he made about Rolling In the Deep singer Adele: "She is a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice."
Apparently Lagerfeld realized that was really wrong to say and started backpeddling.
USA Today reported that Karl told Metro News:
I'd like to say to Adele that I am your biggest admirer. Sometimes when you take a sentence out of the article it changes the meaning of the thought. What I said was in relation to Lana Del Rey and the sentence has since been taken out of context from how it was originally published. I actually prefer Adele, she is my favorite singer and I am a great admirer of her. I lost over 30 kilos over 10 years ago and have kept it off. I know how it feels when the press is mean to you in regards to your appearance. Adele is a beautiful girl. She is the best. And I can't wait for her next CD.
So is this a legit apology? Or just a little band-aid statement written by a man who was once overweight, uses size zero models to show his clothes, and has run his mouth about women's bodies before, once saying that only "fat mummies" object to skinny models.
Oh Karl. Thread those 78-year-old lips shut on this topic. No one is calling you a little too old to be designing clothes, how dare you say Adele is a little too fat. And why do people who were once overweight feel they have license to spout off hurtful comments to people who aren't stick-figure thin? Shouldn't those people have more compassion? The Marie Claire blogger sure didn't.
But we can hardly blame Karl. He lives in a non-reality where anyone over a size 6 is considered too big. Where any woman with hips or breasts wouldn't fit into his clothes. And that "but" that terribly overused phrase noting how a woman is fat but with a pretty face is hard to take out of context. It's a rude statement, negating the compliment. Just like you can't punch someone in the face and then tell them you love them. Well, you can, but only if you are a heartless jerk.
Adele is great with words and it's been said that her album that Karl seems to love so much was written about an ex who wronged her. So maybe this will just be fodder for her next single. But Lagerfeld should do more to show that he isn't a "fatist" -- he could make clothes that fit the average woman. However, we all know that is never going to happen. The average woman can't even afford to buy most of his overpriced clothes. And honestly even if I could, I certainly wouldn't be buying anything he had a hand in now.
