bras on display at lingerie storeWe may have all thought and assumed it to be the case for years now, but in the 2004 cult classic Mean Girls, Queen Bee Regina George hit the nail on the head when she said, "Halloween is the one night of the year a girl can dress like a slut, and no one can say anything about it!" A decade later, not much has changed, except that women seem to have even less of a choice in the matter.

In fact, a recent survey, conducted by the website MyVoucherCodes.co.uk, found that 51 percent of people think Halloween costumes for women are oversexualized. Of course, more than half (58 percent) of men don't see the problem, but two-thirds of women did. Well, of course they did, because women are the ones stuck with stripperwear on Halloween!

Go to any store that sells Halloween costumes, and oh, look, you can be ... a bumble bee or Snow White, maybe the Queen of Hearts, or Alice in Wonderland! A witch? A devil? But wait, weird, who knew how much all of these characters had in common!? Oh, yes, apparently ALL they wear are tight, low-cut bodices and tutus. Just in slightly different colors and designs.

If you want to get a little creative, you might be able to find a skintight bodysuit (a la Playboy Bunny or Catwoman), or sexy, form-fitting dress without the tutu! Wow!

Don't get me wrong. The idea that Halloween is an opportunity to embrace your inner sex worker and dress in a look-at-my-assets way is totally FINE. But the problem lies in that being basically the only option offered to women!

Not only because we deserve better -- we deserve variety and creativity. For us to only have the choice to be cookie cutter "sexy" fill-in-the-blank (cop or firefighter, fictional character, historical figure) is such a snoozefest! It actually makes it far less sexy, because it's just not interesting anymore. It's expected. And since when has anything run-of-the-mill and stale really turned anyone on?

Thus, if you really want your Halloween to be more sexy than spooky, maybe the all-too-common slutty costume is the first thing that has to go.

How do you feel about dressing sexy on Halloween? Does it bother you that most costumes available to women are basically glorified lingerie?
