Hollywood has started a lot of style and beauty trends, but one I wish it would take back pronto is the "trout pout." This is when dermal filler is injected into the lips, making them swell up to thrice their normal size, often the top lip being bigger than the bottom one. I guess this procedure is supposed to make a woman look like Angelina Jolie, but it often just makes her look like Daffy Duck.
The latest sporter of the trout pout is Kardashian matriarch Kris Jenner, who shows up in a trailer for Keeping Up With the Kardashians with enormous fish lips.
The trout pout has made an appearance on many Hollywood actresses, including Meg Ryan, Nicole Kidman, and Lindsay Lohan. I do understand that, as women age, the lips get thinner, and women who are always in the media might want that lip plumpness of their youth back. But this is not that plump lip of your youth, ladies. Your lips did not look like this at 20 and they don't need to look like this now.
Especially for young actresses like LiLo who haven't even lost the natural fullness of their lips yet, the choice for a duck lip look is baffling. Not every face is designed to have oversized, pillowy lips. And when nature doesn't intend a face to have them, but they are forced on the face anyway, it causes an unnatural, alien-like appearance. For actresses, the trout pout makes it almost impossible for a viewer to think of a character instead the actress' weird obsession with her lips.
Kris Jenner isn't an actress, so she has a bit more leeway in how she wants to look, but still, why would anyone desire to look so unnatural? I think it's because filler-injected lips are so common in Los Angeles that if you don't have them, you think you look wrong. I imagine if I lived in L.A. for a few years, I'd probably end up getting them myself!
Ladies, I know you think the trout pout makes you look sexy, but most extreme fashions look ri-duck-ulous in 20 years. Remember how feathered hair was all the rage? White eye shadow? Perms? Think about that.
