Clik here to view. Not sure if you remember, but a few months back, Tim Gunn and Lady Gaga got into a fight. I know, random. And it wasn't, like, a fight fight, with yelling and hair pulling. It was, like, a Hollywood fight with commenting to various media outlets about the other person. And, truth be told, it really was just Tim commenting on Gaga, saying things about her style like, "Who would want to emulate that? It’s not even fashion. Those are costumes." Gaga never acknowledged Gunn's comments.
But nonetheless, Gunn is at it again. Sort of. He tried to explain his anti-Gaga comments to Hollywood Life, and, well, it pretty much seems like he's still anti-Gaga.
She doesn’t wear clothes, she wears costumes. So would I ever put her on a best dressed list or list her among fashion icons? Of course not. Do I disrespect her? Of course not. She’s remarkably talented, and the world’s a better place for having her, but best-dressed list? Not in my vocabulary.
I love Gaga just as much as the next gal, but I must admit, the Project Runway alum has a point here. Meat dresses and prosthetic alien-like shoulders aren't fashion. They're art. And Gaga's an artist, so, really, it shouldn't matter, right? No harm, no foul.
Most people would not walk around in anything Lady Gaga has ever worn. They're impractical, uncomfortable, and a lot of the time, controversial. In other words, they aren't clothes. They are costumes, just as Gunn describes. They're something you or I would wear on Halloween. (Quick: How many Lady Gagas have you seen the past few Halloweens?)
Of course, her not being a "good dresser" doesn't take away from the fact that she's immensely talented and prolific. We like Gaga for what she wears. But Gunn's right, she shouldn't wind up on any best dressed lists.
Do you think Lady Gaga should be on a best dressed list?
