3 MTV VMAs Looks We Adored and 3 That Made Us Cover Our Eyes (PHOTOS)

Miley CyrusYou know you're really starting to get older when you catch yourself saying, "OMG! That's disgusting!" at least six or seven times during the MTV Video Music Awards. And while most of the appalling stuff that took place was during the performances of the show -- some of the bad moments happened on the red carpet too.

Apparently the 2013 VMAs weren't the place to dress to impress this year, which is why there were definitely more hits than misses in the fashion department. Actually, finding a few looks that were deserving of any sort of positive recognition was a bit of a challenge -- but somehow I managed.

More from The Stir: MTV Video Music Awards: Miley Cyrus & Taylor Swift Steal the Show (VIDEOS)

Check out these photos to see three ladies who looked pretty lovely -- and three who might want to think about hiring a new stylist, stat.

3 Ways to Look Great In Trendy Prints

Post by April Daniels Hussar

Boden pintuck shirtIn theory, I love the print trend. In practice, though, I think it can be a little daunting: Buying a printed piece of clothing is riskier than buying solids, because it's much easier to mix and match solids! Plus, some prints can tend to make you feel less svelte, which is no fun. Luckily, there are some tips and tricks to start working with prints in a subtle but rockin' way.

1. Prints can work with your body type. If you've got a part of your body you particularly like and want to emphasize, that's where the printed piece should go, and the reverse is also true. If you're more of pear shape, a printed top (like the Boden Pintuck shirt pictured above) paired with solid bottoms will draw the eye upward:

... while, if you have a lovely full bust (but worry about appearing top heavy), a printed bottom will balance out your whole look:

Asos Curve

ASOS Curve Pencil Skirt ($15.19 at ASOS.com)

2. Don't be afraid to mix prints! I love a really bold print mixture (like stripes with florals), but it can be hard/daunting to pull off. If you're going to wear two pieces with a similar print (like, say, a floral print), one trick is to keep them in the same color scheme so they complement each other. You can also go for one piece with a print that's a little more subtle than the print on the other item. Printed bottom also look really cute with graphic tee.

Jigsaw Silk Floral Top ($76 at Johnlewis.com) with Charter Club Skirt ($64 at Macys.com); Ann Taylor Petite Fresco Floral Print Peasant Blouse ($50 at AnnTaylor.com) with **Jodie Jeans by Motel ($85 at TopShop.com)

3. Nervous about printed pants? Printed jeans are a huge trend, and now there are more and more printed trousers and other pants coming out. If you feel self conscious that printed pants will make you look heavier, steer clear of really big, bold prints with a contrasting background. Instead, stick with a smaller print that doesn't have a lot of background showing, or a more subtle print, like dark on dark. You can also go for vertical, rather than horizontal prints.printed pants

The TOPSHOP Huge Flower Skinny Trousers ($84 at TopShop.com) on the left are fabulous, but will be less forgiving than the more sublte Gap 1969 Cheetah Print jeans in the middle. ($70 at Gap.com). The Current/Elliott The Stiletto Jeans on the right are super hip, and have a subtly vertital print that will be elongating.

Do you love the printed trend?

Maci Bookout's New Hairstyle Is Red Hot (PHOTO)

Post by Emily Abbate

Maci BookoutWhen it comes to the stars of MTV's Teen Mom, they all seem to know a thing or two about good hair. Making the best life decisions? Eh, not always. Regardless, from Kailyn Lowry's perfect sock bun to Jenelle Evans' flawless straight hair -- I'm always jealous of their ability to make perfect hairstyles seem effortless. Today's obsession: Maci Bookout's new red hair.

Okay, so Maci has been a fiery redhead for quite some time. However, the mom of all-too-cute Bentley recently ventured to the hair salon to crank up her style, and believe me the results are H-O-T.

Just wait, you're gonna be red with envy:

maci bookout

Wow ... I really like it, but yeah it's extreme. Sure, it's one thing to go from being a blonde to a redhead and crank out that kind of color. However, Maci is just amplifying her natural tones and I think she has the attitude and confidence to totally pull it off.

Maci's new hair is a great example that women don't always have to do something totally drastic for a hair change. Adding in some highlights to tweak your color, like Maci did, is an easy way to mix things up. Not ready to go bold? Try a simple side bang or even adding in some long layers. You may just be surprised how much the little touches can make you feel like a new woman!

Are you a fan of Maci's intense red hair?

Farrah Abraham Wears Mackenzie Douthit's Wedding Dress to Adult Entertainment Event (PHOTO)

farrah abrahamWho wore the long ruffly, sparkly, sweetheart-necked dress better? Teen Mom Mackenzie Douthit at her recent wedding? Or Farrah Abraham during a routine night out on the town? If you said "Mackenzie", you're right. If you said "there is no 'right' to a question like this; fashion is subjective", you're wrong. Here's why:

Mackenzie wore this super fancy, super elaborate gown to her wedding. Farrah wore it to Starbucks. Just kidding. Okay, so it's not like Farrah wore the dress out for a random day of grocery shopping and getting the oil changed, but she did wear it to the 2013 Gentlemen’s Club Expo & Trade Show in Vegas. And gadzooks, this seems like an awfully fancy dress to wear to an event like that! She should have gone with something short for the occasion. Something less champagne-colored and ruffly. Something not so ... bridal. I mean, seriously, if you threw a bouquet in Farrah's hands, she'd look like she was either ready to tie the knot or shrink herself down and stand on the top of a four-tiered, buttercream cake.

Both Mackenzie and Farrah are lovely ladies, but I'm going to have to say this is a case in which Mackenzie definitely wore it better. And hey, she should feel honored, because she also wore it first. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. And Farrah? She was definitely imitating Mackenzie's dress at the Gentlemen's Club Expo.

Abraham, y'burnt.

Who do you think wore it better?

Taylor Armstrong's Engagement Ring Is So Not ‘Beverly Hills’ (PHOTO)

Post by Nicole Fabian-Weber

taylor armstrongHave you heard the good news? Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Taylor Armstrong is engaged. And her ring is ...  actually, kind of pretty. When we think Beverly Hills, we immediately go to glitz! Glamour! Gaud! Super gigantic platinum rings! But the ring Taylor's lawyer boyfriend, John Bluher, bestowed unto her is really different. And there's nary a speck of platinum in sight. Smooth move, Bluher.

Check it out:

ring

The ring has a whopping 121 diamonds in it, and while I'm not really into the whole fleur-de-lis shape thing, I do really like the idea of a gold ring with a few (or, you know, 121) diamonds in it, instead of one massive rock that's like, "What up!!!" It's different -- especially for Beverly Hills, where most engagement rings have their own sleeping quarters. And something about this ring just seems so Taylor. I feel like she always has a bedazzled fleur-de-lis or peace sign somewhere on her clothes or jewels.

So, nice work, picking out a ring, random lawyer guy. It's different. It's pretty in its own way. And it seems perfect for your bride-to-be. Mazel!

What do you think of Taylor's ring?

Kristen Stewart's Dark Hair and New Tattoo Make Her Look Nothing Like Kristen Stewart

Post by Mary Fischer

Kristen StewartWhoa! Talk about a transformation! Wait until you see photos of Kristen Stewart's black hair and the new tattoo that was spotted on her arm while filming scenes in Berlin for her new movie, Sils Maria.

I know, I know -- I was relieved as hell when I realized that her new ink is fake and that she chose to switch up things in the hair department for the sake of a film, not because she wanted to try out a bold new look.

OMG. Are you even believing those pics? She's almost unrecognizable -- but the annoyed look on her face totally gives her away as KStew. (Come on, you'd be pissed off too if photographers wouldn't leave you alone.)

Ok, back to the hair and tattoo. First of all -- this darker shade completely washes her out and makes her look even pastier than she normally is, which isn't a good thing. When she has lighter shade of brown and reddishhighlights going on, it really brightens her up and makes her face stand out more.

And as far as the tattoo goes -- this one is definitely way too big for her petite frame. Remember back in June when Kristen got that tiny tat on her wrist? Yeah, that one was cute and subtle and suited her perfectly. But this one is kind of an eyesore -- so thankfully it'll magically disappear once she's done filming.

But even though this new, darker style isn't really Kristen's best look, it must be kind of fun to experiment with different appearances for the sake of doing movies, especially since she's being paid to do so.

Oh come on, wouldn't you wear fake tattoos and go for jet black hair if a big fat salary came along with it? (I know I would.)

What do you think of KStew with darker hair and more ink?

Katy Perry Flashes Gold Grillz at VMAs in Disastrous Tooth Malfunction

Post by Michele Zipp

katy perryI will admit that I really like Katy Perry. I think Russell Brand is a real *insert the worst word ever here* when he said she was awful in bed. Maybe she was awful with him because there was no love there anymore. Girl's gotta feel something in order to be into it, you know? Which is also why I'm really loving her latest song "Roar."

I got the eye of the tiger, a fighter, dancing through the fire 'cause I am a champion and you're gonna hear me ROAR! Louder, louder than a lion 'cause I am a champion and you're gonna hear me ROAR!

Sing it, Katy! Naturally she wore a tiger print dress at the VMAs and I loved it, but when she flashed those gold grillz, I cringed and thought TOOTH MALFUNCTION!!

In some of the photos of Katy during the VMA arrivals, there is no sign of those atrocious grillz. Only her pretty pearly whites. But then these appeared and reappeared during the after-parties, too. If you look closely, it appears as if she has a bit of a pink and blue gummy bear stuck on those gold braces on her two front teeth. What in the world is that? Katy, I know you like to let your colors burst because you are a firework but please, let's leave the awful face making antics to Miley Cyrus.

This grillz trend needs to die. I thought it did back when half tops were considered uncool, but even that trend has returned, so I guess you never know. They call them crop tops in their re-invention. I guess you can say I had a previous incarnation of grillz, but they were called braces -- real ones that I couldn't pop in and out (unless you count the retainer days). They were silver and there was nothing cool about them at any time. So I just don't get why anyone would want to adorn their teeth with anything except maybe some bond to make them whiter.

Maybe when she's gets to be 98 and her teeth start falling out. then that would be a great time to have some fun with some grillz. Until then, keep them white ... even brighter than the moon moon moon. I still love you, Katy.

What do you think of Katy's grillz? Would you ever??

'Bachelor' Star Tierra LiCausi's Sexy 'Bikini' Looks an Awful Lot Like Underwear (PHOTO)

Post by Mary Fischer

Tierra LiCausiShe may have come off as totally insane a little bit intense on Sean Lowe's season of The Bachelor, but there's no denying that Tierra LiCausi is really, really entertaining -- not to mention pretty darn gorgeous. (Oh come on -- remember how Sean drooled over her when she got out of the limo? Girl has some serious good looks.)

And she's certainly not shy about flaunting what she's got either. Tierra posed in her bikini and posted these photos of herself to Instagram with the caption, "Summer time." (Let's just ignore the fact that the photo went up three days ago and it's almost fall.)

Her body definitely looks amazing, but I can't lie -- I had to look at the pics a good three or four times before deciding she is, in fact, donning a bikini and not standing there in her bra and panties.

Seriously -- what's up with this new underwear bikini trend? LeAnn Rimes and Brandi Glanville were spotted sporting similar suits recently. It's impossible not to notice that their swimwear looks very similar to Hanky Panky lingerie -- as does this two-piece Tierra is wearing.

And even though they all look great, I'm sorry, but I just don't get it. Yes, I realize that lace is sexy and all -- but does it really hold up when it gets wet? I can't imagine jumping into a pool or trying to brave the waves in the ocean wearing one of these things -- because I highly doubt it would stay in place after a good soaking.

Huh. Maybe these are just fancy bikinis that you lay out and sunbathe in versus wearing in the water? You know, like swimsuits that have sequins or rhinestones on them.

I'm not even going to kid myself and pretend I have the body to try out this new trend, but even if I did, I'm not sure I'd be on board with hitting the beach wearing what some might assume are my unmentionables. I mean, I am a mom after all -- what would people think? (I'd really hate to give anyone the wrong impression.)

Are you a fan of the underwear bikini?

Which ‘Teen Mom’ Wears Red Hair Best: Chelsea, Maci, or Jenelle? (PHOTOS)

Post by Nicole Fabian-Weber

teensFirst Chelsea Houska did it. Then Maci Bookout did it. Now Jenelle Evans went ahead and followed suit. You guys, why are all the Teen Moms dyeing their hair red? And furthermore, why do they all look good with this hair color? It isn't an easy look to pull off. Maybe some sort of hormone is released into your body if you give birth before the age of 20 that automatically makes you look good as a redhead?

Or, you know, maybe they all just have similar complexions?

Despite Chelsea's penchant for what's either a tanning bed or bronzer, all three girls have naturally fair skin tones -- and fair skin tones tend to work really well with red hair. Also, Chelsea, Maci, and Jenelle all went with a different hue and style each.

Chelsea's is more of a deep burgundy, and she went for an all-over look, as opposed to just highlights:

chelsea houska

Maci's (yes, that's Maci) is more of a natural red with blonde highlights:

maci bookout

And Jenelle's, like Chelsea's, is more burgundy, but she just went with highlights against what looks like dyed-dark brown hair:

Hayden Panettiere Does Something So Shocking With Her Hair It Almost Looks Fake (PHOTO)

Post by Mary Fischer

Hayden PanettiereIt's perfectly normal to want to experiment and change up your hairstyles from time to time to keep things exciting -- but just wait until you see Hayden Panettiere's new locks, which are anything but characteristic for her.

Compared to a lot of other celebrities, she's just so fresh faced and natural, well, other than the boob job she's rumored to have had, of course. (That doesn't count.)

And that's why it seems strange that she went for such a drastic change with her bold new do. Hayden's hair is so shocking, in fact, that I'm not totally convinced that she isn't wearing a wig.

Drum roll, please -- check out those blunt bangs and her platinum blonde shade!

Hayden Panettiere

Well, what do you think -- are you digging it? I hate to say it, but I'm really not a fan. At all.

Take a closer look -- couldn't this be a wig? It certainly wouldn't be the first time a celeb donned fake hair in an effort to nab a little extra attention. There's a chance that Hayden's style could magically go back to normal the next time we see her.

But if this really is a permanent change, it's kind of a shame. The heavy bangs make her look a few years older, and her hair is so straight, it really takes away from the natural beauty vibe she usually has going on. And one more thing about the bangs -- they hide her gorgeous face! Hayden's skin is flawless, and it just seems like a waste to cover up her perfect complexion.

Hopefully this major shift is only temporary, and the old Hayden will be back to showing off her beautiful self in no time. But if her new hair does turn out to be the real deal, those bangs are going to be a serious bitch to grow out. Just sayin'.

Do you think Hayden is wearing a wig? And do you like her hair this way?

Liquid Gold Liner Is Like Grillz for Your Eyes

$

Post by Michele Zipp

I'll give it to Katy Perry. She can wear gold grillz and flash a snarl and still manage to look gorgeous. But gold teeth isn't something you just wear because it's a gold teeth kind of day. What kind of day actually is a gold teeth kind of day anyway? Certainly not one of those too rushed to brush your teeth days. Not a rainy day thing. And not one of those I need to wear a pretty dress because I'm bloated and feel ugly kind of days. I kind of feel the same way about liquid gold liner -- specifically this new stuff from Jane cosmetics. It's like grillz for your eyes.

I'm all about smudging tons of blackest black all around my peepers with my lashes heavily inked in blacker than black or just hiding behind sunglasses. I'd dabble in certain blues or greens. Maybe a little streak of silver on the lower lash line when I'm feeling frisky. But I think if you are going to put some serious gold bling liquid liner on your eyes, then you should just be prepared to act like a unicorn.

Not that there's anything wrong with acting like a unicorn. Everyone loves a unicorn. They make people happy. I would assume their farts are peony-scented and leave behind a rainbow-colored crop-dust -- who wouldn't want that? That's like magic. That IS magic. Magic is magical!

Refinery 29 writer Gabrielle Korn tested this gold liner out and the result was absolutely unicorn-esque. Of course it was. Her gorgeous skin, pixie haircut, thin neck with no sign of age or wrinkle -- I wanted to hate her with that perfect line of gold on her lid. But I loved her. In the same way I love unicorns. But could I pull this off? Oh hell no. Not even on the darkest night with a dark crystal as my guide. I would look like I was trying to be Rainbow Brite after a drinking binge. And no one wants me to look like that when I'm running after my kids at the playground. I would scare people. I would be the opposite of what a unicorn should be. I would be the unicorn who galloped too close to sun and then fell in the leprechan's pot of gold and came out with gold where it's not supposed to be.

Jane's liquid liner is also waterproof so you can cry a crystal clear river of dreams and you will still be a gold-dusted eye woman. Or emerge from the pool perfectly gilded, the sun catching the flecks making it seem like golden beams of gorgeousness propel from your eyes. If it was something you could actually pull off, that is. Or if you weren't me. Thankfully it comes in black (and a whole bunch of other colors), too.

Would you ever wear gold liner? What do you think of the look?

Hey Hey! Ho Ho! Your Floral Pants Have Got to Go!

Post by Lindsay Ferrier

ASOSI know that hideous floral pants are a "thing" this summer, but I didn't realize how bad it had gotten until I opened up the Sunday New York Times and saw literally dozens of women pictured in them last weekend out on the sidewalks of Park Avenue.

HORRORS.

According to the NYT, the "most interesting" styles of floral pants were the "pajama-like styles," like these Somedays Lovin Muchacho Floral Pants (Urban Outfitters, $89).

Let's recap. Park Avenue. Cutting-edge fashionistas. Wearing FLORAL PAJAMA PANTS.

Women of New York, I ask you:

HAVE YOU LOST YOUR MINDS?

But wait! It gets worse!

ASOSThe TRULY fashion-forward out there have been committing DOUBLE FLORAL this summer -- wearing a matching floral top and bottoms. I even saw a photo of Rihanna earlier this summer in an outfit much like this one.

I just. I can't. I CAN'T.

ASOSAnd then there's the floral jumpsuit. Here's the brutal truth, ladies. A floral jumpsuit is not flattering on ANYONE'S figure, let alone a curvy girl. I know because I know.

The Corner

And I have to say it is a dark day indeed coming to the realization that someone, somewhere paid $1,535 for these pants. I AM NOT EVEN KIDDING.

My 6-year-old just looked over my shoulder as I was writing these words. "Those pants costed one thousand, five hundred thirty-five DOLLARS?" he asked.

"Yep," I sighed.

"Those look like pajamas, right?" he said.

"Yep."

"People BUYED them?!"

"Yep."

I think it's appropriate for a 6-year-old to have the final word on this post. But before I go, I want to know this ...

Would YOU wear floral pajama-like pants in the name of Fashion? Are you wearing them now? Because if you are, uh ... I'm sure you look fabulous!

Kate Middleton Looks Amazing in Skinny Jeans in First Appearance After Baby (PHOTO)

Post by Mary Fischer

Kate MiddletonIt's only been a few weeks since Prince George arrived, but Kate Middleton made her first public appearance post-birth this morning at the Ring O' Fire ultra marathon in Anglesey. And I think I speak for the masses when I say she's absolutely glowing!

Ok, so we already knew she'd reclaimed her pre-baby figure based on the photos that turned up earlier this week of her grocery shopping. But get a load of the skinny black jeans she chose for her first "official" outing -- are you believing just how slender she is? She's definitely bounced right back better than most moms, but I guess that's to be expected, considering how little weight she put on during the pregnancy to begin with.

But forget about her figure, can we just talk about her overall outfit and how, well ... it screams MOM?!? Oh come on, people -- she's wearing a blazer, for crying out loud. (Total mom staple.)

While her outfit is very polished and put together, it's still much more casual than what you'd expect to see her in. It kind of looks like something any other mom would wear to greet runners at a marathon. (Although our hair probably wouldn't look as perfect.)

Want to know the best part of her whole ensemble? She recycled the Zara top she's wearing. Yep, it's the same one she was spotted wearing during her pregnancy while on a ski trip in the Alps.

And how about her shoes? Heels definitely wouldn't have been appropriate for this particular event, which is probably why she went for her signature LK Bennett wedges. But since wedges are a great choice for moms who want to look stylish yet still want to be steady on their feet while carrying their babies, we can't help but wonder if she'll kick her heel collection to the curb altogether -- at least for the next few months or so.

Yeah, probably not. But it's still fun to think about her being somewhat of a regular mom, just like us.

What do you think of Kate's choice of attire?

lady gagaEven though we're pretty much over her since the meat dress, we had to take a break from all the important things going on this weekend to discuss Lady Gaga's latest hair.

No, not this one of her in her short natural hair, looking normal and boring.

But her hairstyle from yesterday. It's seriously one of the biggest mops of tresses we have ever seen her wear. Even bigger than the VMA's. She puts the '80s to shame with this concoction.

Check out this hairtastic photo:

lady gaga hair

This is a photo of Lady Gaga leaving her London hotel for rehearsals yesterday. Of course it's just a wig and all, but what a wig it is. We're guessing there's a small dog in there to help keep it so voluminous.

The 27-year-old singer is preparing for her performance in the iTunes Music Festival, which will be live streamed on Sunday, September 1 at 4 p.m. Eastern Time. The festival is 30 consecutive days of free shows, kicking off with Gaga and also including Paramore, The Lumineers, Elton John and Robin Thicke (hopefully without Miley).

Hunter Boots Get a Makeover but What's the Point?

Post by Rebecca Stokes

hunter boots, rag and boneThose trendy Hunter Boots are not a new thing. The popular British brand has been around long enough that Queen Elizabeth the second is a huge fan. Even here in the States if you check the streets on a rainy day you are going to spot at least a few stylish ladies wearing them as they stomp merrily (and fashionably) through puddles on their way to and from work.

Hunter Boots are popular -- they're a known entity as a boot brand. It's safe to say that they can't be squeezed for cash, right? So it begs the question: what's with this recently announced partnership with fashion house Rag & Bone?

A look at the new line (available for pre-order at Rag & Bone's online store) doesn't make their intention any more clear. Yes, they are boots. Yes, they look maybe slightly...different? But nothing about them screams haute couture.

If I'm going to drop bucks on a pair of already-expensive rain boots (which already aren't going to get anywhere near to daily wear) why would I continue to shake the contents of my wallet out for are essentially the exact same boots? Sure the cut, is slightly new, and there's a zipper -- all the better to bite into my calf-meat, I grumble.

I say all this as a fan of Rag & Bone, too. If I had clicked the link and been presented with a surprising take on the old Hunter Boot classic, the purchase might be easy to rationalize. But for this only-vaguely-different design? I think I'll hold onto my pennies for a more worthwhile splurge.

Do you think the new boots are worth it?

4 Ways to Pull off The Slouchy Pants Trend

$

Post by April Daniels Hussar

Catherina Malandrino slouch pantI love the way the  slouchy pants trend looks, but it can be intimidating when you're used to tailored and skinny pants that really keep you tucked in, if you know what I mean. When I say "slouchy pants" I mean a pant that's loose at the top and tapered at the bottom. An extreme version is a harem pant, but there are many different versions, and some are easier to pull of than others.

You may already have a closet full of slouchy pants -- cool! However, if you're like me and are a little nervous about trying this look, here are some easy tips for getting started and looking great.

1. Go for black. I love those printed Catherine Malandrino pants shown above ($345 at Cusp.com) (ouch!). However, a fairly sleek, black slouchy pant will be flattering to your curves and still look totally on point without making you feel like Bozo the Clown. Black slouchy pants will look great with solid and printed tops.

2. Avoid super dropped crotches. Listen, if you like this look and can pull it off, then more power to you. I personally think it's reeaaaalllly tricky to look good in what Zac Posen on Project Runway refers to as "poopy pants!"

3. Pair your slouchy pants with a more tailored/ slim-fitting top for a sleeker overall look.

4. Wear heels if you want a longer, leaner silhouette.
