#SpeakBeautiful Campaign Reminds Us Not to Hate on Oscar Gowns Tonight … or Yourself Tomorrow

We love to check out the great fashions on Oscar night—don't tell anyone I said this, but I've been known to turn off the show sometime after the red carpet extravaganza is over because that's the real fun. But we also know analyzing the fashion flops can provide a few cheap thrills and there are some celebs (not naming names) whose entire careers are based on slamming how (mostly) female celebrities look. Dove and Twitter have partnered to convince us to keep body and beauty positive on Oscar night—for reasons that extend beyond just being nice to our favorite stars.

Their joint campaign is called #SpeakBeautiful and addresses the fact that women posted a whopping 5 million negative tweets about either their own or another person's beauty and body last year. Instead of focusing on how a celebrity's thighs look or whether she's too skinny or too big, they're inviting us to use this hash tag during the award's show and follow the rule we learned so many years ago: if we don't have anything nice to say ... well, we know the rest.

So far, this hash tag IS working. It actually makes you feel better to read some of the beautiful, positive posts that have been tweeted thanks to this campaign. Here are a few examples:

Julianne Moore is so gracious and lovely! So thoughtful & generous about the need for #alzheimers research #SpeakBeautiful

— cat lincoln (@DearBadKitty) February 23, 2015

And another ...

Love @LauraDern She wears turquoise ring for women battling lung cancer to raise awareness for the cause. #SpeakBeautiful#Oscars2015

— adventuregirl (@adventuregirl) February 22, 2015

And one more for good measure ...

The red carpet should be a site of celebration, not fashion ridicule & image dissection. #SpeakBeautiful Focus on the elegance. #DovePartner

— danah boyd (@zephoria) February 23, 2015

Here's the Dove/Twitter video that aired during tonight's red-carpet coverage. There's still time to get involved and spread some positive energy!

See this video on The Stir by CafeMom.

What's do you think about this campaign? Do you think it will work?

Sum up the fashion of the 87th Oscars in two words? Easy! Red hot. Oh, sure, there were classic black, white, and black and white gowns (Margot Robbie -- love! Reese! Patricia Arquette!), gowns made of pearls (Lupita!), a good deal of pink (Zoe Saldana, Gwyneth, Viola Davis!). But when the stars took to the biggest red carpet of the year tonight, a jaw-dropping number of 'em rocked ravishing red gowns -- and even tuxes!

Here, 11 of the most blazingly beautiful red looks that absolutely set the red carpet ablaze.

Which was your favorite red style to take the red carpet?

The 11 Ridiculous Stages of Applying Self Tanner (GIFS)

self tanner

Self tanner is a beautiful thing. It helps you obtain a sun kissed glow any time of year sans the wrinkles and melanoma. But, applying self tanner is nothing short of an acrobatic feat. Between attempting to thoroughly rub cream into the small of your back and trying to wash your hands before the dreaded orange palms make their appearance, you deserve a medal for your self tanner application. Or, you know, a funny GIF post. Here, the 11 stages of applying self tanner.

First, you shower, exfoliate, and generally get your skin ready. That tanner won't stick to those icky elbows that haven't been scrubbed in, oh, a year.

Then, you set the mood. You gather your supplies, lock the door, and get ready for a self-tanning-palooza.

Quickly, you rush to the sink to wash the tanner off your hands. The last thing you need is orange palms when you're trying to get your glow on:

Get the Look: Margot Robbie's Sleek Bob From the 2015 Oscars (PHOTO)

Gorgeous Australian actress Margot Robbie is quite a chameleon. From blonde temptress in The Wolf of Wall Street to raven-haired beauty in Z is for Zachariah, the 24-year-old causes heads to turn wherever she goes. But her appearance at Sunday's 87th annual Academy Awards may have been her most impressive yet. The Focus star debuted a stunning new hairstyle that is sure to have ladies everywhere running to the salon for a Robbie-inspired makeover.

With a deep side part, the shoulder-length cut was the perfect complement to her dazzling Saint Laurent gown and gazillion dollar Van Cleef & Arpels necklace.

More from The Stir: Oscars 2015: Everything Is Oprah!!! (PHOTOS)

So just how did the always-put-together star get her locks looking so luscious? Those of us without personal stylists sure would love to achieve (er, attempt) that look!

We learned that celebrity hairstylist Renato Campora first applied a sleek and shine primer as well as a thickening lotion to Robbie's hair while it was still damp. Then, he parted the actress' tresses and dried 80 percent before adding a root lifting spray mousse. He then finished drying her hair by working in sections with a round brush. Frizz-defying oil was then applied to the ends of Robbie's locks before Campora flat ironed her hair.

And just how did Robbie's 'do remain in tact during the drizzle? Campora completed and protected the style with an anti-humidity aerosol hairspray.

As you can see the results are spectacular and well-worth the effort. We love that Vogue's March 2015 covergirl isn't afraid to change up her look. Kudos to Robbie for continually upping her game and inspiring women to try out a bold, new hairstyle.

What do you think of Robbie's new look?

Steal Dakota Johnson's Super-Sexy Oscar Beauty Look (PHOTOS)

Dakota Johnson Oscars

Miss Fifty Shades of Grey looked SMOKIN' at the Oscars Sunday night, no? Dakota Johnson's Yves Saint Laurent dress was red hot, but it was only part of the equation. Her hair and makeup were utter perfection, and we can all steal a page or two from her beauty book.

Let's start with her sassy ponytail. Celebrity Stylist Mark Townsend dreamed up this sassy 'do -- a bold choice for such a formal occasion, but it totally worked. He started by working a little Youthful Vitality Silk Crème through her damp hair, then blowing it dry with a rubber-cushion brush. What gives the ponytail volume and texture is a liberal spraying of Dry Shampoo throughout her hair -- AFTER blowdrying, and before pulling it into a ponytail.

Bonus tip: According to Mark, "The key to dressing up a ponytail is in the details, so I pulled a small amount of hair from the ponytail, wrapped it around the base to hide the elastic, and secured with bobby pins." Aha!

Next: makeup. Those gorgeous smudgy eyes and that almost bright red but not quite lip perfection! There's something a little demure about the toned down red, right? Makes it even sexier!

Rouge COCO lipstick Gabrielle 444

Makeup artist Kara Yoshimoto Bua created Dakota's gorgeous look. She used Chanel Precision Lip Definer in 92 Capucine and Chanel Rouge COCO lipstick in 444 Gabrielle. But, if Chanel's a little pricey for you, Covergirl Colorlicious Lipstick in Garnet Flame would do the trick very nicely.

For an easy smoky eye, I love the Benefit Smokin' Eyes kit, and Almay makes a really nice, affordable smoky eye kit as well.

Last but not least, did you happen to notice those vampy red nails? Deborah Lippman did Dakota's Oscars manicure, but they're not telling us what the color is. Sneaky! Two great options for a similar, vamped out mani: Deborah Lippmann Single Ladies and Essie Poor Li'l Rich Girl.

Jessica Chastain’s Oscars Makeup Reinvents the Cat Eye (PHOTO)

jessica chastain 2015 oscars

Among all the dazzlingly gorgeous looks from last night's Oscars, one in particular caught our eye: Jessica Chastain's cat eye makeup. Instead of the usual heavy black liner, the redhead went for something more subtle and sophisticated -- and mrowr, was it hot!

The secret to this look is using brown shadow. Makeup artist Kristofer Buckel explains, "I used my Kristofer Buckle Always Flawless Day to Night Palette and YSL Couture Variation Palette to create a soft brown winged eye. By using shadow, I was able to create a softer look than liquid liner." Then, following up the shadow with black mascara made Chastain's lashes stand out dramatically.

You're going to want to use an angled brush with short bristles to get that eye shadow precision. (And, of course, you're likely to find great drug-store versions of these shadows.)

More from The Stir: Cat Eye Makeup Tutorial

Before Buckel created that fantastic eye, he lavished Chastain's eyes with Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment With Avocado followed by Kiehl's BB Cream in Light.

It's such a flattering look for Chastain, isn't it? Especially with her fair skin and red hair. The nude lip was a smart choice as well.

I love cat eye makeup on other people but I never wear it myself because it looks too harsh on me -- and I have dark hair and eyes! I think I may actually try this softer alternative out myself.

What other makeup looks do you love on other people but don't dare wear yourself?

10 Mascara Mistakes Keeping You From Bombshell Lashes

Mascara's kind of my thing, so when I had the chance recently to get a makeup touch-up from Jennifer Fleming, the NYC-based celebrity makeup artist known as @FaceMaid, my mind was blown when she pointed out a big mistake I've been making all these years. BLOWN, I tell you!

According to Fleming, I've been missing out on major mascara impact by leaving the bottom ends (closest to the roots) of my lashes naked. WHAT?!! What else have I been doing wrong all this time?! I decided to grill her for more mascara advice ...

So here's how to really amp up your mascara game and get the most out of everyone's favorite beauty product.

How many of these mistakes have you been making?!

Kim Kardashian Gets a Plus-Size Makeover (PHOTO)

As celebrities are constantly trying to whittle their waists and outdo each other when it comes to tunnel-sized thigh gaps, one man would actually like to see these lovely ladies a little larger than they appear in real life. Artist David Lopera, 20, of Spain, has put his Photoshop skills to the test and added a little extra junk to Kim Kardashian's trunk. He has his way with other skinny starlets as well in some eye-opening new photos. Check it out!

Lopera explains that men he calls "chubby chasers" have tracked him down and asked him to inflate their favorite babes. He explains:

Men are always writing to me asking if I can make their celebrities crushes look a bit fatter. Emma Watson, Jennifer Lawrence, and Kim Kardashian are some of the most popular requests I get.

More from The Stir: Khloe Kardashian Reveals the Secret to Her Amazing Weight Loss (PHOTO)

It's funny to think that men are doing the asking, but Lopera insists he too finds these woman sexier with "a bit of bloat." That's music to some ladies' ears. What new mom wouldn't secretly love to hear at least one celeb say, "I can't seem to lose this baby weight no matter how many times I pass on the French fries and ice cream, so bring on the pizza!" (I can't be the only one who's been dying for How I Met Your Mother's Cobie Smulders to eat a cheeseburger and get a little roundness back in her beautiful face.)

Many of the ladies Lopera retooled actually look a bit healthier with some meat on their bones. Granted, he took it to quite an extreme, but you know what I mean. It's great to see what Katniss Everdeen could look like if she had access to a 24-hour buffet and didn't have to hunt for her dinner. Even scantily clad Disney darlings like Ariel from The Little Mermaid and Elsa get pumped up by Lopera. And who knows, maybe heavier versions of these waifish heroines aren't a bad thing for little girls who are rounder and wondering why they don't often see their images mirrored back on the big screen.

We're dying to know what these stars think of the artist's renderings. You can't help but imagine them embracing their personal trainers and spending extra hours in the gym to avoid this becoming a reality. Still, it's fun to see their new "looks" and hear that some men aren't seeking super-skinny women after all.

What do you think of these celebrities' new looks?

Keira Knightley Grabs Lunch in Her Red Carpet Dress (PHOTO)

keira knightley

Oscar-nominated actress Keira Knightley is taking a page from Kate Middleton's fashion playbook and recycling her frocks. But these aren't just any old dresses! The stunning mom-to-be was seen heading to lunch with her hubby, James Righton, in Los Angeles wearing the custom-made Michael Van Der Ham gown she wore to a BAFTA-sponsored reception earlier this month. She paired the gown with some flat metallic sandals and off she went.

And this isn't the first time The Imitation Game star has repurposed a pretty special dress. Knightley discussed how she's re-worn her wedding gown over and over again because she "wanted to be in something I had had a great time in, something I would have a great time in again."

What a great sentiment and we love that the star isn't lumping these gorgeous threads in the "one-and-done" pile.

Image may be NSFW.
Clik here to view.
keira knightley

Let's be honest: Some of these gowns are true works of art. Who wouldn't want to wear them more than once? Designers, seamstresses, and stylists all put tons of time and effort into creating these looks; it seems a shame to wear them for one night and then cast them off.

Plus, who doesn't love putting on a garment that has such a happy association and makes you feel fantastic? We don't blame her one bit for going with old favorites.

Even though she's pregnant, we're pretty sure the lovely Londoner has no shortage of designers clambering to clothe her, so clearly this is a deliberate choice and we can't get enough of it.

While some of her dresses probably have price tags that would make your average gal swoon, seeing her re-wear them makes the star feel more like a regular person -- despite her talent and stardom. Plus, it goes against the wasteful excess that you sometimes attribute to the rich and famous. We hope she continues this trend and inspires others to recycle some of their winning looks.

If you were a star, would you rewear your award gowns?

Unretouched Pics of Beyonce Cause Outrage -- Because How Dare She Not Look 'Flawless'

Post by Maressa Brown.

beyonce going to 40/40 club
Just about every day, we see a new "makeup-free" selfie from a celeb or paparazzi shot of our favorite star walking around in sloppy clothes looking "just like us." But it's NOT every day we see Beyonce -- the queen of all things #flawless -- totally unretouched and flaunting less than glowing, smooth, perfectly clear, and perpetually youthful-looking skin! So when photos from a 2013 L'Oreal ad campaign depicting exactly that were leaked yesterday, it's no wonder all hell broke loose!

Check out the pics in question, which were originally posted to The Beyonce World
— Dann (@actuallyCR) February 18, 2015
After fans went beserk, the site pulled the pics and posted the following statement:

Due to the disdain of the BeyHive, we have removed the photos. We don't want to cause any drama, nor do we wish to start fan wars. Some of the things we have seen posted were just horrible, and we don't want any parts of it. We were just posting the photos to share the fact that our queen is naturally beautiful, at the same time she is just a regular woman.

Wild that something like these pics is enough to send fans into such a tizzy! The rationale The Beyonce World gave for posting the photos in the first place makes perfect sense. We should ALL -- mega-fans or not -- be totally cool with the fact that Bey is "a regular woman."

But this whole fiasco goes to show that far too many of us actually prefer fantasy over reality. Especially when it comes to stars like Queen Bey whose ethereal, effortless beauty we'd prefer to put on a pedestal than see blown to smithereens.

More from The Stir: Beyonce's Valentine's Day Date Got a Little Sticky (PHOTO)

Ultimately, though, anyone who sees these images as an assault on an idol needs to take a chill pill! The bottom-line is that she's gorgeous. And you can be gorgeous without being perfect or flawless. In fact, flaws add character and can make someone even MORE stunning.

But whatevs, BeyHive isn't having it, so let's all forget Beyonce is human, alrighty? Cuz apparently, that's just too tough a pill for some to swallow.

Do you think these images are insulting to Beyonce or empowering to other women? Or neither?

Say Goodbye to Embarrassing Tattoos Painlessly -- Finally!

Post by Stephanie Booth.

women's leg with tattoo

Maybe -- just maybe -- you once gave in to a whim and got a ridiculous tattoo you now regret. And maybe -- just maybe -- you roll your eyes every time you lift your shirt/pull on your socks/unbutton your pants, but you're too squeamish to get it lasered off. Well, that unicorn-with-your-ex's-face is on its way out. (Yes! Finally!) Pretty soon, you'll be able to gently fade it painlessly away into a cringe-worthy memory.

And for that, we can thank Alec Falkenham, a 27-year-old student at Dalhousie University in the U.K. While working towards his PhD in pathology, he's invented a topical cream that dissolves tattoo ink over time.

Even better, it's painless and won't cause any of the side effects that laser removal does, like blistering and scarring.

The cream makes use of your body's natural healing process. When you get inked, pigment gets under your skin, which is consumed by white blood cells called macrophages. That's what forms your visible tattoo. But over time, new macrophages replace the old ones, causing your ink to eventually fade or blur.

More from The Stir: 16 Things Tattoos Say About the Kind of Parent You Are

To greatly simplify, Falkenham's cream makes use of this process by encouraging new macrophages to actually glom onto and take away the pigment. ("Glom onto" is not a scientific term, FYI. But hey, we're not all PhD candidates in pathology.)

So far, it's worked like a charm on Falkenham's volunteers -- who are all pigs with tattooed ears. (Please insert your own joke here.) And since this story broke, he's received many requests to participate from humans, but alas, is not taking any.

Right now, Falkenham's technology is called Bisphosphonate Liposomal Tattoo Removal (BLTR) but we think he needs something catchier. Might  we suggest Tramp Stamp-Out?

Not like, you know, we have one or anything.

Do you have a tattoo you'd love to get rid of?

Getting a manicure or pedicure (or better yet, both!) can be a comforting and relaxing treat in the middle of a hectic day, not unlike sitting down with your favorite food. Well, what if you could combine those two activities? Pizza Hut Australia just came out with an eight-pack of polishes inspired by its pan pizza. Though it was merely a contest prize rather than a new menu item you could order up with your pepperoni, it got us thinking about some shades that make us hungry. We took a look around and found some stunning nail colors that remind us of the decadent treats we often crave.

Take the one pictured above- -- doesn't it make you think of the sweet-smelling, yellow batter of birthday cake? Imagine looking down at those nails all day, dreaming of cake, and not gaining an ounce? Sounds good to us!

Hairy armpits on ladies. You're either into them or you're not. And Bruce Willis and Demi Moore's daughter, Scout Willis, clearly is into them. Scout debuted her hairy pits at a London photo exhibition on Thursday, but surprisingly, that wasn't the most attention-grabbing thing about Scout that evening.

As you can see, Scout chose to wear a dress that left very little to the imagination to the art show (which included her work). This isn't all that surprising, being that Scout is one of the inspirations behind the Free the Nipple campaign. But, the armpit hair? Don't think we've seen that one yet on her. Thoughts?

I don't think I could ever rock a hairy pit, but I've gotta say: I respect women who do -- especially women who do it in public arenas where they know they're going to get media attention -- most likely, negative media attention -- for it.

The following gowns outfits may not have all ended up on the best-dressed lists (many of which, let us recall, were curated by someone just like me; see above), but at least they weren't dull! Here's to hoping Sunday night's red carpet is filled with even more adventurous beauty.

Giuliana Rancic is everywhere right now! That's because the E! host and Fashion Police star is in the middle of doing what she does best -- covering Awards Season, of course. And with the Oscars right around the corner (this weekend -- eee!), you might think the celeb mama wouldn't have time for a full-on makeover. But you'd be wrong!

Giuliana took to YouTube to document a total "DIY" hair color transformation she did with Vidal Sassoon's new at-home kit. Check it out.

See this video on The Stir by CafeMom.

She flaunted the end result on Instagram, too.

LOVE, right?!

I have to say, when Giuls first debuted the blond last summer, I was not a fan. She's always been a gorgeous brunette. Why mess with that? That said, it grew on me. The blond she was rocking just before going red was okay. But the new color -- which she refers to as medium gold brown, but it definitely came out at least slightly red -- is so much better, warmer, more flattering somehow with her skintone.

More from The Stir: Giuliana Rancic Says Breast Cancer Changed Her Style for the Better

'Course my preference will always be for her to go back to her long chestnut tresses! But as she mentioned, like many of us, Giuls loves to mix it up every now and then. And now we can look forward to seeing her take the Oscars red carpet on Sunday night with those rockin' reddish locks. Hot!

What do you think about Giuliana's new hair color? Do you prefer it over the blond?

Patricia Arquette Demands Space to 'Get Old' — Why Can't We Give It To Her?

She's nominated for an Academy Award for Boyhood, but that doesn't make Patricia Arquette immune to criticism -- more specifically, fashion criticism. In a recent fashion slideshow in The New York Times, Arquette was mocked for a dress she chose to wear to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Grants Banquet last August. The look -- a baggy, gray caftan -- is a far cry from typical Hollywood style, but so what? Going off of some of Arquette's poignant recent interviews, clearly she's comfortable in her skin and with aging -- and what's more beautiful than that?

The piece in the NYT captions a photo of Arquette in the caftan, "Ms. Arquette is not one of those actresses with a corporate wardrobe entourage plotting her every nanosecond in front of the flashbulbs, as evinced by her appearance in a gray cotton caftan at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Grants Banquet last August." Scathing? No. But, certainly isn't flattering.

In the film she's nominated for, Arquette ages gracefully over 12 years, and more importantly, naturally and comfortably. In an interview with The New York Times, Boyhood director Richard Linklater said that Arquette "never flinched" when it came to growing older on screen. "So vanity free," he said.

But, it was Arquette who hit the nail on the head when it came to being vanity free. "This idea of the world expecting you to remain an ingénue forever -- it’s a very short shelf life if you’re going to commit to that as your career, and I knew that early," Arquette said. "I was trying to get out of it for years." She then continued, "I gotta get old, people, do you understand? I need space to grow and get old and be a human being. I don’t want to be trapped in your ingénue bubble. And I don’t agree with it either, by the way."

Now, that's a message I can get behind. That's what people -- young women in particular -- should be focusing on about Arquette, not the caftan that shows she clearly doesn't have a stylist or an interest in fashion.

I'm rooting for Arquette -- not just because of her message, but because she was damn good in Boyhood. And, let's all hope that if (when) she wins, people will focus on things other than "who she was wearing."

What do you think of Arquette's message?

Poised to declare war on skinny jeans are JNCOs, large and in charge and bringing back the memories of raves and hardcore shows of the 90s. Yes, it's true, JNCO jeans are making a comeback, but who is going to want to wear them?

Let's take a moment and remember:

Can't wait!!!!! Death to #SkinnyJeans #Jnco #wideleg #90s #90sKid #baggypants. I'm all set with then ultra wide legs but I'm good with 12-14in opening

Was she waiting outside a rave hoping her boyfriend brings her out a pacifier? Or is this outside a NOFX show in hopes to catch a glimpse of Fat Mike? Oh JNCOs, you bring back so many memories! The model in an old JNCO jeans ad makes them almost seem wearable today. Almost.

#jnco yes.

I'm all about the wide leg jean, but I'm only going to incorporate them into my wardrobe. I will not get rid of my skinnies. And I'm never going back to the ultra-wide leg. I graduated from JNCOs a long, long time ago. I had a pair, two if you count the ones my then boyfriend had and I wore sometimes. Mine were black corduroy, with cut and frayed hems that were always wet or dirty from the sidewalks. I was in college. Laundry days were only when I went home for a visit. I wore them with a tight half top, studded dog collar necklace, and my septum piercing. My guy, of course, had a chain wallet, a hoody with the thumbs cut out of the sleeves, and a skateboard, always. I need to point out that I had big hair once, too. Confirming the fact that I took on the so-called trend that was laughed at and frowned upon years later.

But JNCOs are coming back -- can't say that about Aqua Net hair. And the new JNCOs aren't like the old ones, according to Women's Wear Daily. While they are still big and baggy, they aren't like JNCOs of yesteryear. There will be slouchy knit jeans (pajamas?) and denim with leg openings ranging from 20-23 inches. Now that's massive compared to a basic boot cut, but still less than half the size of the 50 inch wide leg openings sold back in the day. When looking at their website, which promises to reveal more soon, there's this:

Tattoos. Graffiti. And folded over hems? Now I'm intrigued.

Did you wear JNCOs back in the day? What do you think of a comeback?
