Post by April Daniels Hussar.

New York Fashion Week is filled with gorgeous and lust-worthy designs, but so much of it can feel, let's say, impractical? Sigh. Well, we might not all be able to afford the exact items of clothing walking down the runways, but there are always great hair, beauty, and nail ideas to be had!

Ignore the fact that all of these models are about 19, six-foot tall, and generally perfect. That's beside the point! Just focus on the cool, totally doable makeup and hair inspirations and how-to's, and then let us know -- which one is your favorite? (Bet you'll be totally surprised by slide #7!)

Nicole Richie Shows Off New Pixie Cut and Color: Check it Out! (PHOTO)

Post by Lisa Fogarty.

When it comes to celeb hair, Nicole Richie can do no wrong. Her hair has been California blonde and Boho long, shoulder-length and violet, black, blue, silver, and now—the most vivid, amazing shade of pink we've ever seen. AND, because it isn't enough of a fashion statement to dye your hair pink, Nicole has also cut her locks into a super-chic pixie. Richie debuted her new hair at Tom Ford's fall 2015 fashion show and, paired with a GORGEOUS, figure-flattering animal print gown, looked positively fierce.

Nicole, 33, who shares two young children with musician husband Joel Madden, isn't the kind of mom who settles on one look that works for her and continues to rock it year after year. The lady follows her impulses and keep things whimsical. Here she is at Tom Ford:

Stunning. Bold. And PRETTY. Had she gone for a fire-engine red, I feel she would have looked too much like a man-eater in this dress. But this subtle and feminine shade of pink is fabulous on her and really brings out her hazel eyes.

More from The Stir: Dyeing My Hair Pink Made It Easier to Like My Mom Body

Nicole says she has been working with her good friend and hairdresser, Andy LeCompte, for years and that her decision to go pink happened on a random Tuesday while she was listening to music and that the whole thing was very "spur of the moment."

Usually, hasty beauty decisions end up proving to be disastrous, but Nicole seems to pull off every look she tries. I love how she never plays it safe and continues to be excited by the idea of a makeover. She's truly a style icon.

Do you like Nicole's pink pixie haircut?

#SpeakBeautiful Campaign Reminds Us Not to Hate on Oscar Gowns Tonight … or Yourself Tomorrow

Post by Lisa Fogarty.

We love to check out the great fashions on Oscar night—don't tell anyone I said this, but I've been known to turn off the show sometime after the red carpet extravaganza is over because that's the real fun. But we also know analyzing the fashion flops can provide a few cheap thrills and there are some celebs (not naming names) whose entire careers are based on slamming how (mostly) female celebrities look. Dove and Twitter have partnered to convince us to keep body and beauty positive on Oscar night—for reasons that extend beyond just being nice to our favorite stars.

Their joint campaign is called #SpeakBeautiful and addresses the fact that women posted a whopping 5 million negative tweets about either their own or another person's beauty and body last year. Instead of focusing on how a celebrity's thighs look or whether she's too skinny or too big, they're inviting us to use this hash tag during the award's show and follow the rule we learned so many years ago: if we don't have anything nice to say ... well, we know the rest.

So far, this hash tag IS working. It actually makes you feel better to read some of the beautiful, positive posts that have been tweeted thanks to this campaign. Here are a few examples:

Julianne Moore is so gracious and lovely! So thoughtful & generous about the need for #alzheimers research #SpeakBeautiful

— cat lincoln (@DearBadKitty) February 23, 2015

And another ...

Love @LauraDern She wears turquoise ring for women battling lung cancer to raise awareness for the cause. #SpeakBeautiful#Oscars2015

— adventuregirl (@adventuregirl) February 22, 2015

And one more for good measure ...

The red carpet should be a site of celebration, not fashion ridicule & image dissection. #SpeakBeautiful Focus on the elegance. #DovePartner

— danah boyd (@zephoria) February 23, 2015

Here's the Dove/Twitter video that aired during tonight's red-carpet coverage. There's still time to get involved and spread some positive energy!

What's do you think about this campaign? Do you think it will work?

self tanner

Self tanner is a beautiful thing. It helps you obtain a sun kissed glow any time of year sans the wrinkles and melanoma. But, applying self tanner is nothing short of an acrobatic feat. Between attempting to thoroughly rub cream into the small of your back and trying to wash your hands before the dreaded orange palms make their appearance, you deserve a medal for your self tanner application. Or, you know, a funny GIF post. Here, the 11 stages of applying self tanner.

First, you shower, exfoliate, and generally get your skin ready. That tanner won't stick to those icky elbows that haven't been scrubbed in, oh, a year.

gif

Then, you set the mood. You gather your supplies, lock the door, and get ready for a self-tanning-palooza.

gif

But, first, you need to stretch.

gif

You begin your application. So far, so good.

gif

Then, you get to your back.

You do your best to distribute the tanner evenly, but deep down, you know you're gonna look like this:

gif

You start getting upset. Why weren't you blessed with a gorgeous olive-hued complexion? Why, God, why?!

tanner

Quickly, you rush to the sink to wash the tanner off your hands. The last thing you need is orange palms when you're trying to get your glow on:

You're done. You check yourself out one last time in the mirror, making sure you haven't missed any spots.

You're pleased with the results.

And if anyone asks you, it's totally natural.

Get the Look: Margot Robbie's Sleek Bob From the 2015 Oscars (PHOTO)

margot robbie

Gorgeous Australian actress Margot Robbie is quite a chameleon. From blonde temptress in The Wolf of Wall Street to raven-haired beauty in Z is for Zachariah, the 24-year-old causes heads to turn wherever she goes. But her appearance at Sunday's 87th annual Academy Awards may have been her most impressive yet. The Focus star debuted a stunning new hairstyle that is sure to have ladies everywhere running to the salon for a Robbie-inspired makeover.

With a deep side part, the shoulder-length cut was the perfect complement to her dazzling Saint Laurent gown and gazillion dollar Van Cleef & Arpels necklace.

More from The Stir: Oscars 2015: Everything Is Oprah!!! (PHOTOS)

So just how did the always-put-together star get her locks looking so luscious? Those of us without personal stylists sure would love to achieve (er, attempt) that look!

We learned that celebrity hairstylist Renato Campora first applied a sleek and shine primer as well as a thickening lotion to Robbie's hair while it was still damp. Then, he parted the actress' tresses and dried 80 percent before adding a root lifting spray mousse. He then finished drying her hair by working in sections with a round brush. Frizz-defying oil was then applied to the ends of Robbie's locks before Campora flat ironed her hair.

And just how did Robbie's 'do remain in tact during the drizzle? Campora completed and protected the style with an anti-humidity aerosol hairspray.

margot robbie

As you can see the results are spectacular and well-worth the effort. We love that Vogue's March 2015 covergirl isn't afraid to change up her look. Kudos to Robbie for continually upping her game and inspiring women to try out a bold, new hairstyle.

What do you think of Robbie's new look?

Steal Dakota Johnson's Super-Sexy Oscar Beauty Look (PHOTOS)

Dakota Johnson Oscars

Miss Fifty Shades of Grey looked SMOKIN' at the Oscars Sunday night, no? Dakota Johnson's Yves Saint Laurent dress was red hot, but it was only part of the equation. Her hair and makeup were utter perfection, and we can all steal a page or two from her beauty book.

Let's start with her sassy ponytail. Celebrity Stylist Mark Townsend dreamed up this sassy 'do -- a bold choice for such a formal occasion, but it totally worked. He started by working a little Youthful Vitality Silk Crème through her damp hair, then blowing it dry with a rubber-cushion brush. What gives the ponytail volume and texture is a liberal spraying of Dry Shampoo throughout her hair -- AFTER blowdrying, and before pulling it into a ponytail.

Bonus tip: According to Mark, "The key to dressing up a ponytail is in the details, so I pulled a small amount of hair from the ponytail, wrapped it around the base to hide the elastic, and secured with bobby pins." Aha!

Dakota Johnson Oscars

Next: makeup. Those gorgeous smudgy eyes and that almost bright red but not quite lip perfection! There's something a little demure about the toned down red, right? Makes it even sexier!

Rouge COCO lipstick Gabrielle 444

Makeup artist Kara Yoshimoto Bua created Dakota's gorgeous look. She used Chanel Precision Lip Definer in 92 Capucine and Chanel Rouge COCO lipstick in 444 Gabrielle. But, if Chanel's a little pricey for you, Covergirl Colorlicious Lipstick in Garnet Flame would do the trick very nicely.

For an easy smoky eye, I love the Benefit Smokin' Eyes kit, and Almay makes a really nice, affordable smoky eye kit as well.

Dakota Johnson Oscars nails

Last but not least, did you happen to notice those vampy red nails? Deborah Lippman did Dakota's Oscars manicure, but they're not telling us what the color is. Sneaky! Two great options for a similar, vamped out mani: Deborah Lippmann Single Ladies and Essie Poor Li'l Rich Girl.

What did you think about Dakota's Oscars beauty look?

Jessica Chastain’s Oscars Makeup Reinvents the Cat Eye (PHOTO)

jessica chastain 2015 oscars

Among all the dazzlingly gorgeous looks from last night's Oscars, one in particular caught our eye: Jessica Chastain's cat eye makeup. Instead of the usual heavy black liner, the redhead went for something more subtle and sophisticated -- and mrowr, was it hot!

The secret to this look is using brown shadow. Makeup artist Kristofer Buckel explains, "I used my Kristofer Buckle Always Flawless Day to Night Palette and YSL Couture Variation Palette to create a soft brown winged eye. By using shadow, I was able to create a softer look than liquid liner." Then, following up the shadow with black mascara made Chastain's lashes stand out dramatically.

You're going to want to use an angled brush with short bristles to get that eye shadow precision. (And, of course, you're likely to find great drug-store versions of these shadows.)

More from The Stir: Cat Eye Makeup Tutorial

Before Buckel created that fantastic eye, he lavished Chastain's eyes with Kiehl’s Creamy Eye Treatment With Avocado followed by Kiehl's BB Cream in Light.

It's such a flattering look for Chastain, isn't it? Especially with her fair skin and red hair. The nude lip was a smart choice as well.

I love cat eye makeup on other people but I never wear it myself because it looks too harsh on me -- and I have dark hair and eyes! I think I may actually try this softer alternative out myself.

What other makeup looks do you love on other people but don't dare wear yourself?

Jennifer Lawrence Does the Harried Mom Look Better Than You Do (PHOTO)

Post by Adriana Velez.

jennifer lawrence dior

Look how cute this is! The new Dior ads feature Jennifer Lawrence styled as a harried mom, all messy hair and and under-done makeup. Bless their hearts. And guess what? YOU, TOO can get the same look. We're gonna show you!

Actually, most of us have already been rocking the messy hair look for years. Just ... not this way. Why is that?

Let's see... For starters, Jennifer Lawrence is 24 years old and probably sees one of those Hollywood dermatologist/magicians. And then it took a team of makeup artists to create her "no makeup" look because no one's eyebrows are shaped that way naturally, nor are anyone's lips that color on their own.

There is no magical dermatologist in my life, and I have exactly two minutes in the morning to make up my face, which I MUST do because I am very much not 24 years old.

Then hair stylists spent at least an hour carefully curling every twist, sculpting every wave, and placing each little fly-away wispy bit just so. There was hair product at play here. Oh yes, much hair product.

I didn't have time to do my hair today. I kind of brushed it on my way out the door. I don't use product because using product requires planning and decision-making.

Then there's the I-see-angels glowing light that bathes her face in the most flattering way possible.

WHERE is my light, jokers?

And finally, they put her in Dior dresses because that's the whole point. But you know, the perfect posh dress elevates even authentically messy hair. The handbags don't hurt, either.

dior handbag

I'm wearing that sweater I always wear. I carried a paper bag into the office with me.

Notice the glaring lack of children with JLaw. Also, her clothes are free of stray oatmeal crust and leaking breastmilk stains. SO CHIC!

In conclusion, here are our hot "get the look" beauty tips for Jennifer Lawrence's all-natural, messy hair/don't care style.

Be young. Don't have kids. Have a professional do your makeup. Have a professional do your hair. Wear Dior and carry a fancy lady bag. Get someone to light you properly wherever you go. (Yes, moms, even the playground. IT'S WORTH IT!) If all else fails, there's always Photoshop.

Aw, we're just kidding around, JLaw. We love you and you look gorgeous! I'm just saying -- this "natural" look is deceptively hard to pull off. But I'm trying, you guys. I'm really trying!

How close is Jennifer Lawrence's harried mom look to your own?

New ModCloth Ads Actually Make Us Want to Buy Swimsuits (PHOTOS)

Post by Caroline Olney.

Online fashion retailer ModCloth recently released advertisements for their line of 2015 swimwear where the models aren't models. Nope. They're the employees of the company. Meanwhile, girls everywhere sigh in relief, because we can finally see what these bathing suits will look like on our own, real life, yeah-I-splurged-and-had-ice-cream-last-night body types.

The advertisements come on the heels of the February release of Sports Illustrated's swimsuit issue, which we all know can be a little harsh on our self esteem. And though it's wonderful if you have a body like cover model Hannah Davis, ModCloth wanted to make sure that no one is scared of bikini season this year, no matter your size.

More from The Stir:'What's Underneath' Is a Slideshow of Naked Women With One Seriously Powerful Message

The nine employees who modeled the swimsuits are all gorgeous, all different shapes, and they're all totally rockin' the dots. The idea behind the campaign, CCO Susan Gregg Koger said, was to reassure women that diversity is beauty, and to get us all to smile at bathing suit ads for once. So, so appreciated. We know we did!

The company has been a long-time supporter of body positivity, and last year signed a pledge not to Photoshop their models. They're known for their wide selection of plus-sized clothes -- a line which they plan on expanding even more in the spring and summer of this year.

The social media response to the campaign has been overwhelmingly positive ... and we can't say we're surprised. In the U.S., two-thirds of American women wear above a size 14, and yet (and yet!) this year, for the first time ever, Sports Illustrated put in a "plus-size" model in their editorial pages. And she's a size 12.

More from The Stir: Plus-Size Model Ashley Graham Rocks Teeny Bikini in 'SI' Swimsuit Issue (PHOTOS)

We're hoping ModCloth's campaign starts a change in advertising, but for now we're excited to see at least some familiar bodies in swimsuit ads. Next up, we're hoping to see some models with weak chins, acne scars, and gray hairs.

How do you feel about ModCloth's choice of swimsuit models this year?

Mom Becomes Beauty Pageant Queen After Watching Her Teen Compete

Post by Lisa Fogarty.

There are stage moms and then there are moms whose daughters inspire them to take the stage themselves. That's what happened when 16-year-old Misha Grimes recently competed in the Miss Teen Galaxy UK pageant and her 53-year-old mom, Kasha, realized she was missing out on all of the fun and decided to become a pageant queen herself.

Mother and daughter were unable to support each other's catwalk efforts on competition day because the Miss Teen pageant just so happened to fall on the same day as Kasha's Mrs. Galaxy UK pageant. But both women were obviously prepared: Misha won second-runner up in her pageant, while mom snagged the first runner-up spot in hers. Not too shabby!

Misha has reportedly been competing since she was 13, but this was a brand new world for Kasha, who spent several years cheering her daughter on before deciding it might be fun to try her luck in front of the judges.

If you suspect the teen resents her mom for trying to horde some of her glory, it certainly doesn't seem that way based on the glowing things Misha has to say about Kasha, including that she hopes she looks like her at her age.

So, moms in pageants—why the heck not?! Kasha credits the pageant with giving her a boost and even more self-confidence that she already had, and this is coming from a woman who was the oldest competing for Mrs. Galaxy. Kasha says a lot of the other women were in their 20s, which makes me respect her even more for having the guts to get on stage in a swimsuit and feel good about her body.

More from The Stir: 'Protesting' Beauty Pageant Contestant Rips Crown Off Her Rival's Head (VIDEO)

But the greatest thing about Kasha's new pageant lifestyle isn't that she feels good about her thighs, it's that she and Misha have raised £11,000 for charities and she says she wants to change people's perceptions about the amount of work it takes to compete in a pageant. If beauty pageants make this mom happy, and her daughter is on board, more power to them both.

What do you think about his mom competing in beauty pageants at the same time as her teen daughter?

Model Karlie Kloss Ditches Victoria's Secret for the Smartest Reason

karlie kloss victoria's secret show

Victoria's Secret Angels never fail to achieve soaring levels of fame, but Karlie Kloss is simply skyrocketing. Recognized to many as Taylor Swift's BFF and to others as the girl from this ad or that ad (she's in a gazillion!), the 22-year-old has undoubtedly achieved supermodel status. But it's official: Karlie's giving up the Victoria's Secret runway for the time being -- and for the best possible reason!

The St. Louis native is going to be enrolling at NYU's Gallatin School of Individualized Study this fall. According to New York magazine, she even got a letter of recommendation from alum Christy Turlington Burns. Not too shabby!

The news that Karlie is trading in her Angel wings for academia was first reported by PEOPLE.com as a rumor, but Victoria's Secret's senior creative Ed Razek released a statement that confirmed it all:

Well, there you have it, folks. And the general reaction to Karlie's move? Resounding applause, obviously!

More from The Stir: Taylor Swift Has a New Roommate & They Are Inseparable

Surely, some stars may feel that having so much success makes them invincible, and why bother with a degree at all? But Karlie must realize there's immeasurable value to securing a (world-class!) education. Girl's got her priorities straight, that's for sure. The runway can wait --now, it's time to hit the books!

What do you think about Karlie quitting Victoria's Secret? Do you think she's sending an inspiring message to young women?

Taylor Swift Admits She Used This Powerful Body Part for Revenge

Post by Adriana Velez.

taylor swift

We are only now beginning to understand the great power contained within Taylor Swift's belly button. We've written before about how the star fastidiously keeps her navel hidden from view. But recently Swift unleashed her belly button upon the public like a carefully-deployed secret weapon for one important cause: Revenge.

On an afternoon in January Swift posted a photo on Instagram in which she posed in a bikini with members of the band Haim. Unlike her typical, 1950s-style waist-high swimwear, these briefs cut well below her waist, revealing what could be the first ever public sighting of Swift's navel. The world gasped.
Greetings from Maui! @haimtheband

A photo posted by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift) on
But why? Why reveal it now? Swift explained her shocking choice on BBC Radio 1 interview yesterday.

Swift and her Haim besties were on a whale-watching expedition in Maui when they spotted a fishing boat half a mile away. Swift's security got out the binoculars and sure enough, they saw the "fishermen" holding a long-lens camera. They were paparazzi. And they'd gotten their catch all right.

We realize, okay, so they got photos of us in our bikinis. I don't want them to make a hundred thousand dollars stalking us -- for a bikini shot! So we're like, get up back on the bow of the boat, we're taking better bikini shots so they don't make as much money on theirs.

A preemptive strike of the belly! She posted that photo before the paps could sell theirs for a lucrative profit.

And now you know how much Swift's belly button is worth. In one swift (heh) upload she snapped about a hundred thousand dollars out of a photographer's grasp and struck one more victory on behalf of all the celebrities who just want to enjoy a little PRIVACY FOR ONCE IS IT SO MUCH TO ASK FOR?!?

More from The Stir: Taylor Swift's Bikini Photo Shows a Part of Her We Never See

It may be a long time before we see Swift's belly button again. Clearly it is too much for us to handle. She is wise to keep it under cover. Yet with each reveal it loses a little bit of its power.

Meanwhile we are left wondering, will the day ever come with Swift can harness the power of her navel for good? Revenge is great and all that. But imagine if we could convert that power into electricity and light all of New York City, since she's now its ambassador?

I'm just thinking outside the box here. But think about it: Swift could become our next great superhero, all thanks to her belly button.

Do you think Swift will wait a long time before revealing her navel again to the public?

Patricia Arquette Demands Space to 'Get Old' — Why Can't We Give It To Her?

$

Post by Nicole Fabian-Weber.

patricia arquette

She's nominated for an Academy Award for Boyhood, but that doesn't make Patricia Arquette immune to criticism -- more specifically, fashion criticism. In a recent fashion slideshow in The New York Times, Arquette was mocked for a dress she chose to wear to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Grants Banquet last August. The look -- a baggy, gray caftan -- is a far cry from typical Hollywood style, but so what? Going off of some of Arquette's poignant recent interviews, clearly she's comfortable in her skin and with aging -- and what's more beautiful than that?

The piece in the NYT captions a photo of Arquette in the caftan, "Ms. Arquette is not one of those actresses with a corporate wardrobe entourage plotting her every nanosecond in front of the flashbulbs, as evinced by her appearance in a gray cotton caftan at the Hollywood Foreign Press Association’s Grants Banquet last August." Scathing? No. But, certainly isn't flattering.

In the film she's nominated for, Arquette ages gracefully over 12 years, and more importantly, naturally and comfortably. In an interview with The New York Times, Boyhood director Richard Linklater said that Arquette "never flinched" when it came to growing older on screen. "So vanity free," he said.

But, it was Arquette who hit the nail on the head when it came to being vanity free. "This idea of the world expecting you to remain an ingénue forever -- it’s a very short shelf life if you’re going to commit to that as your career, and I knew that early," Arquette said. "I was trying to get out of it for years." She then continued, "I gotta get old, people, do you understand? I need space to grow and get old and be a human being. I don’t want to be trapped in your ingénue bubble. And I don’t agree with it either, by the way."

More From The Stir: 10 Celebs You Won't Believe Never Won an Oscar

Now, that's a message I can get behind. That's what people -- young women in particular -- should be focusing on about Arquette, not the caftan that shows she clearly doesn't have a stylist or an interest in fashion.

I'm rooting for Arquette -- not just because of her message, but because she was damn good in Boyhood. And, let's all hope that if (when) she wins, people will focus on things other than "who she was wearing."

What do you think of Arquette's message?

I'm all about the wide leg jean, but I'm only going to incorporate them into my wardrobe. I will not get rid of my skinnies. And I'm never going back to the ultra-wide leg. I graduated from JNCOs a long, long time ago. I had a pair, two if you count the ones my then boyfriend had and I wore sometimes. Mine were black corduroy, with cut and frayed hems that were always wet or dirty from the sidewalks. I was in college. Laundry days were only when I went home for a visit. I wore them with a tight half top, studded dog collar necklace, and my septum piercing. My guy, of course, had a chain wallet, a hoody with the thumbs cut out of the sleeves, and a skateboard, always. I need to point out that I had big hair once, too. Confirming the fact that I took on the so-called trend that was laughed at and frowned upon years later.

Just focus on the cool, totally doable makeup and hair inspirations and how-to's, and then let us know -- which one is your favorite? (Bet you'll be totally surprised by slide #7!)
